Journeys in Medicine is an initiative of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Exchange Visitor Sponsorship Program (EVSP).
ECFMG is designated by the U.S. Department of State to sponsor exchange visitor physicians on J-1 visas. Exchange visitor physicians are foreign national physicians who are enrolled in accredited programs of graduate medical education or training in the United States. Although many universities and research institutions in the United States are authorized to sponsor Exchange Visitors in the categories of student or research scholar, ECFMG is the sole sponsor of physician Exchange Visitors in clinical training programs.
During their time in the United States, in addition to strengthening their clinical skills, exchange visitor physicians engage in cross-cultural activities. Through these activities exchange visitors learn about American culture, and share their home culture with their host communities. Following their sponsorship, exchange visitor physicians return to their home country, bringing with them improved clinical skills and a broader global perspective. Journeys in Medicine provides a forum for current and former exchange visitor physicians, and their host institutions, to share their experiences. We hope that these stories inspire our readers and provide tools for others involved in graduate medical education or training.
Journeys in Medicine would not be possible without the written submissions of our contributing authors. If you would like to be considered as a contributing author to Journeys in Medicine, please send an e-mail to JourneysInMedicine@ecfmg.org. We are interested in stories from current or alumni exchange visitor physicians, TPLs, or someone who works with or has been impacted by someone in the graduate medical education or training of an exchange visitor physician.
