ECFMG® is pleased to announce that, on September 1, the Medical Council of Ireland incorporated ECFMG’s Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPICSM) into the Medical Council’s process for assessing the medical qualifications of its Category 4 applicants. Category 4 applicants are those who apply to the Medical Council for registration from medical schools located outside of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland. The Medical Council now requires these applicants to have their medical education credentials primary-source verified through EPIC before submitting their registration applications to the Medical Council. ECFMG is proud to partner with the Medical Council to add primary-source verification—a best practice and the best protection against fraudulent credentials—to the Medical Council’s tools for evaluating the qualifications of its Category 4 applicants and promoting the highest professional standards for physicians practicing in the Republic of Ireland.

ECFMG and its Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) are proud to sponsor the 11th International Conference on Medical Regulation of the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA 2014), which will take place September 9-12 in London. As a conference partner, we look forward to supporting IAMRA’s important functions of sharing information and best practices, as well as the efforts of attendees to achieve excellence in medical regulation.
IAMRA 2014 will offer ECFMG a number of opportunities to showcase EPIC, ECFMG’s initiative that is raising the world’s standard for the verification of physician credentials. Any of the world’s organizations that evaluate the qualifications of physicians—including the medical regulatory authorities (MRAs) that will be represented at IAMRA 2014—can use EPIC at no cost to access ECFMG’s world-class, primary-source verification services. By using EPIC, all organizations responsible for evaluating the qualifications of physicians can make primary-source verification a part of their process.
We are excited about the opportunities that IAMRA 2014 will offer to connect with representatives of the world’s medical regulatory authorities! If you plan to attend IAMRA 2014, be sure to join ECFMG staff for the lunch session on Thursday, September 11, and visit us at ECFMG’s booth. There are also opportunities for personalized discussions with ECFMG staff; if you are a representative of an MRA and would like to meet with ECFMG staff during IAMRA 2014 to learn more about EPIC, contact William C. Kelly, Acting Vice President for Operations, at email@example.com.
All organizations (and physicians!) can learn more about EPIC by visiting www.ecfmgepic.org or by sending e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
As previously announced, in April ECFMG launched its Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPICSM). Today, after six months of operations, EPIC is raising the world’s standard for the verification of physician credentials.
For physicians, EPIC is a powerful new way to build a digital career portfolio of pre-verified credentials related to their medical education, training, and registration/licensure—a portfolio that they can establish in preparation for pursuing career opportunities. For the first time, EPIC brings ECFMG’s world-class verification services directly to physicians. Physicians who use EPIC decide which credentials to add to their portfolio and where and when to send credentials and reports verifying their authenticity.
For physicians who have already had credentials verified by ECFMG, EPIC offers special benefits. If your credentials have been primary-source verified by ECFMG for the purpose of ECFMG Certification or through the ECFMG International Credentials Services (EICS), ECFMG will add those credentials and their verifications to your EPIC portfolio at no cost.
EPIC offers the world’s hospitals, medical registration/licensure agencies, medical schools, and graduate medical education programs the opportunity to incorporate primary-source verification—a best practice and the best protection against fraudulent credentials—into the process for evaluating their physician applicants. Any organization can receive EPIC reports verifying the authenticity of a physician’s credential―at no cost to the organization.
As ECFMG’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Emmanuel G. Cassimatis, M.D., noted, “Physicians are called upon to demonstrate their qualifications throughout their careers. Verification of the authenticity of their credentials by ECFMG makes a strong statement, and is just one of the ways that ECFMG is serving the world’s physicians. At the same time, by assisting members of the international medical and regulatory communities in their missions to protect the public, EPIC exemplifies ECFMG’s commitment to promote quality health care, and is raising the bar worldwide for evaluating the qualifications of physicians.”

Today, ECFMG launched a powerful and innovative tool for the world’s physicians and the entities worldwide responsible for evaluating physician credentials. The Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC℠) enables physicians to build a digital career portfolio of primary-source verified medical credentials and to request those credentials, and reports verifying their authenticity, for any organization, anywhere in the world.
EPIC enables physicians to:
- upload credentials related to their medical education, training, and registration/licensure
- have those credentials primary-source verified by ECFMG
- request to have reports verifying the authenticity of those credentials sent electronically to any organization, anywhere in the world
- maintain a web-based portfolio of credentials that is convenient, secure, and affordable
For the world’s medical regulatory authorities, hospitals, medical schools, and training programs that receive these reports, EPIC is a powerful new tool in fulfilling their missions to serve and protect their constituents. EPIC provides these organizations with:
- the confidence of knowing the authenticity of a physician’s credentials has been verified using ECFMG’s rigorous and internationally respected primary-source verification process
- the security of receiving verifications directly from ECFMG
- the ability to assure constituents and the public that their vetting process is world-class—that they are employing the best practice of primary-source verification
- access to credentials and reports at no cost
For more than 25 years, ECFMG has employed primary-source verification of physician credentials, a process that includes verifying the authenticity of a document directly with the institution that issued it. ECFMG’s expertise in this area has long been available to organizations through its Certification Program and the ECFMG International Credentials Services (EICS). For the first time, EPIC makes this service available to individual physicians.
