ECFMG is pleased to announce that a pilot of its Global Education in Medicine Exchange (GEMxSM) is currently underway! As previously announced, GEMx is an international partnership that will both enhance and simplify the process of medical elective exchanges for medical schools and students around the world. Partnership is central to the GEMx vision. GEMx facilitates strong relationships among schools to afford students with a wide range of high-quality international educational opportunities. The GEMx system is designed for medical schools to promote their school and elective offerings to GEMx students and to other partner schools, and to provide students with a convenient, on-line tool to search and apply for those offerings.
In September 2013, GEMx Partner Schools participating in the pilot began creating school profiles within the GEMx system that describe and promote their medical education exchange electives to students. Information available through GEMx includes course objectives, program requirements, travel information, contact information, and images related to the school and its electives. Feedback from the schools has been very positive, and they are looking forward to building relationships through the GEMx network.
The GEMx pilot began in November 2013. The GEMx system was opened to eligible students of GEMx Partner Schools, providing them with the ability to view school profiles, identify the electives that meet their medical career goals and academic interests, and apply for those electives.
The pilot of the GEMx system is expected to run for approximately one year, during which time ECFMG will ensure that GEMx is meeting the real-world needs of medical schools and students.
