ECFMG will consider exceptions to certain pathway eligibility requirements in limited circumstances.

The eligibility requirements for which ECFMG will consider an exception are:

Applicants may request an exception to one or both eligibility requirements in conjunction with a pathway application.

The reasons that ECFMG will consider as the basis for an exception relate to:

Applicants may use either reason when requesting an exception.

Applicants who request an exception must meet all other eligibility requirements for the pathways and for ECFMG Certification.

Please note that there is no guarantee that a request for exception will be granted. The decision to grant an exception is within the sole discretion of ECFMG.

Reasons for Exceptions
Applying for an Exception

Please note: The deadline for submission of a pathways application was December 31, 2020. ECFMG is no longer considering new requests for exception. For information on 2022 pathways and eligibility requirements for ECFMG Certification and for the 2022 Match, see Requirements for ECFMG Certification for 2022 Match.

You must apply for the exception when you complete your pathway application. Requests for exception will not be considered in advance of your application.

If you believe you qualify for an exception based on the limited and specific reasons described above, you must contact ECFMG for instructions before you apply. Do not begin the on-line pathways application before contacting ECFMG for instructions.

When you complete the application, you will be asked to provide a description of the reason you are requesting an exception and will be required to provide documentation to support your request.

Once your application is received, ECFMG will evaluate it. A case manager will contact you if there are any issues with your application or if we require additional information.

Required Documentation for Exceptions

The following documentation requirements for exceptions are in addition to any documentation required for the pathway to which you will apply.

Important Information on Documentation Submitted in Support of Your Application
Fees and Payment

The fee for applying to a pathway with an exception request is $1,200. Full payment is due when you submit your application.

You must use a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express credit card with a security code; credit available in your ECFMG financial account cannot be used to pay for a pathway application.

Fees related to your application are not refundable. If you submit a pathway application and ECFMG determines that you are ineligible for the pathway or denies your request for exception, your application will be rejected and the fee will not be refunded. In addition, if ECFMG does not receive all required documentation in support of your application, as well as any required verifications of submitted documentation from the issuing authority, your application will not be complete, and the fee will not be refunded.

The preceding information is current as of February 4, 2021 and is subject to change. Please visit the ECFMG website frequently for updates regarding these requirements.
