Deadline for 2004 USMLE™ Applications

(posted July 23, 2004)

If you are applying for a USMLE examination, refer to the guidelines below for completing your 2004 application in time for it to be processed. All dates are tentative and are subject to change. You should monitor the ECFMG website for updates on the deadline for 2004 applications.

The 2005 USMLE application materials are expected to be available on the ECFMG website by the end of August 2004. You should monitor the ECFMG website for updates on the availability of the 2005 materials.

For Step 1 and Step 2 CK

The last 2004 eligibility period for Step 1 and Step 2 CK is October 2004 - December 2004. The deadline for ECFMG's receipt of complete applications for this eligibility period is August 31, 2004.

To apply on-line using ECFMG's Interactive Web Application (IWA) for the October 2004 - December 2004 eligibility period, you should submit the on-line portion of the application as soon as possible. To complete your 2004 application, your completed Certification Statement (Form 183) must be received at ECFMG no later than August 31, 2004. Please note that this deadline may be earlier than the deadline indicated in the Instructions for the Certification Statement and in correspondence you may receive from ECFMG. When the 2005 USMLE application materials become available through IWA, you will no longer be able to work on the on-line portion of an application for the October 2004 - December 2004 eligibility period. This transition may occur as early as mid-August 2004.

If you submit a paper Step 1/Step 2 CK application for the October 2004 - December 2004 eligibility period, your application must be received by ECFMG no later than August 31, 2004.

If your 2004 Step 1 / Step 2 CK application is received after August 31, 2004, it will be rejected, and you will be required to reapply using the 2005 application materials. If your 2004 application is rejected, any payment received with your 2004 application will be credited to your ECFMG financial account. The first eligibility period for which you can apply using the 2005 materials is the November 2004 - January 2005 eligibility period.

For Step 2 CS

Applicants who are registered for Step 2 CS are assigned a twelve-month eligibility period that begins on the date that their registration information is entered into the Step 2 CS scheduling system. Typically, this is the same date that the registration process is completed.

If you use IWA and submit the on-line portion of the Step 2 CS application before the transition to the 2005 application materials, your completed Certification Statement (Form 183) should be received at ECFMG no later than August 31, 2004 to complete your 2004 application. Please note that this deadline may be earlier than the deadline indicated in the Instructions for the Certification Statement and in correspondence you may receive from ECFMG.

If you submit a paper 2004 application for Step 2 CS, it should be received at ECFMG no later than August 31, 2004.

If your 2004 Step 2 CS application is received at ECFMG after August 31, 2004, it may be rejected, and you may be required to reapply using the 2005 application materials. In this case, your Step 2 CS eligibility period will be assigned, as described above, after you submit a 2005 application and the registration process for your 2005 application is complete. If your 2004 application is rejected, any payment received with your 2004 application will be credited to your ECFMG financial account.
