Exchange Visitor Sponsorship Program (EVSP)

Cross-Cultural State Resource

The U.S. Department of State (DoS) J-1 visa program was designed to facilitate educational and cultural exchange between the people of the United States and other countries. As such, cross-cultural activities are essential to any J-1 participant’s stay in the United States. The cross-cultural component of the exchange visitor program gives J-1 physicians the opportunity to learn about U.S. society and culture both inside and outside the hospital setting; share their own cultures, traditions, and views with Americans; and to see the world from another perspective.

We believe that the first step to ensuring a quality cross-cultural experience is to make sure visitors are comfortable and familiar with the state in which they plan to reside. This Cross-Cultural State Resource provides J-1 physicians with a user-friendly guide for identifying opportunities for cross-cultural immersion in their host states and every state across the country. The guide includes an individual resource page for each state, as well as for the U.S. territories of the District of Columbia (also known as Washington, D.C.) and Puerto Rico. Just click on the name of the state/territory below to access the individual pages and learn more about the following:

In addition to using this resource, ECFMG encourages all J-1 physicians to follow ECFMG’s Exchange Visitor Sponsorship Program (EVSP) on Twitter @ECFMG_J-1. EVSP regularly posts information about potential cross-cultural opportunities along with current events to its Twitter account.
