Information for Medical Registration Boards
Recognizing that international medical registration boards receive applications for licensure from physicians with medical credentials from outside their jurisdictions, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®) offers the benefits of primary source verification through the ECFMG International Credentials Services (EICS). EICS is an application-based process for verification of medical school diplomas, medical school transcripts and certificates of postgraduate medical training and medical registration/licensure.EICS customizes its application materials to meet the specific credential verification requirements of the medical registration board. EICS can send the customized application materials to the medical registration board either via courier service or email. The medical registration board controls distribution of the EICS application. EICS applications may be made available to physicians through the medical registration board's website or the EICS website. The EICS website also provides information for physicians concerning EICS and completion of the EICS application, and for contacting EICS when additional help is needed.
The EICS application fee for verification of the medical diploma, medical school transcript, and certificates of postgraduate training and medical registration is US$150. The physician applying for medical licensure pays this fee directly to EICS. Medical registration boards may contact EICS concerning alternative payment plans.
EICS offers confirmation of authenticity of medical education credentials that far exceeds notarization, where a notary or other official declares that a photocopy has been compared to the original document and found to be identical and unaltered. EICS verifies the authenticity of the documents directly with an authorized official of the institution that issued the documents. With the advent of affordable high-resolution scanners, printers, and copiers, and advanced graphics software, side-by-side comparison of documents is not as reliable as direct confirmation of the original credential's authenticity with the originating institution.
