The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®) is a private, nonprofit organization sponsored by the American Board of Medical Specialties; American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Association for Hospital Medical Education; Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States, Inc.; and the National Medical Association.

For more than forty years, ECFMG, through its program of certification, has assessed the readiness of international medical graduates to enter U.S. graduate medical education programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). In addition to its primary mission of certifying international medical graduates, ECFMG has developed programs to respond to the needs of the international medical education and licensing communities. In 2000, ECFMG formalized its commitment to the international medical community through establishment of a nonprofit foundation, the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). Through their programs and research, ECFMG and FAIMER contribute in specific, measurable ways to excellence in international medical education.

Refer to ECFMG History for detailed information on ECFMG's organizational and examination history. For information on FAIMER and its activities, refer to the FAIMER 2002 Annual Report.
