Provision of USMLE Performance Data to International Medical Schools

ECFMG has launched an initiative to provide international medical schools with data on the performance of their students and graduates who apply to ECFMG for USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK), and USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS). In the first phase of this initiative, ECFMG began to provide international medical schools with data on the USMLE performance of individual students/graduates in 2009. In the second phase of this initiative, implemented in 2010, ECFMG began to provide international medical schools with aggregate data on the USMLE performance of their students/graduates. ECFMG provides these services at no cost to medical schools.

International medical schools have long expressed interest in obtaining USMLE performance data on their students/graduates, and ECFMG’s efforts to provide such data are proving mutually beneficial for the medical schools and for ECFMG.

Individual Performance Data

Individual performance data are provided to medical schools electronically through the ECFMG Medical School Web Portal (EMSWP) and include whether each examinee passed the exam administration and, for Step 1 and Step 2 CK, the examinee’s numerical score on a three-digit scale. Examinees have the option to have their exam results withheld from their medical school.

To be eligible to obtain these data, schools must meet certain criteria, including having an EMSWP account to verify the status of their students and graduates who apply for USMLE. By the end of 2010, 148 schools had met the requirements for and had established an account to obtain USMLE performance data through EMSWP.

If you are a representative of an international medical school and would like to obtain individual performance data on your school’s students/graduates, e-mail the ECFMG EMSWP Administrator at emswpadmin@ecfmg.org for information on how to establish an EMSWP account.

Aggregate Performance Data

Aggregate data are provided on an annual basis to medical schools that meet certain criteria, including completion of a Medical School Profile survey. Through this survey, schools provide information on their student body, application requirements, medical curriculum, and teaching methods. This information is used by ECFMG’s foundation, FAIMER, in its ongoing efforts to develop data resources and conduct research on medical education programs throughout the world. More than 125 schools met eligibility criteria and received aggregate USMLE performance data on their students/graduates in 2010.

If you are a representative of an international medical school and would like to obtain aggregate performance data on your school’s students/graduates, e-mail the ECFMG EMSWP Administrator at emswpadmin@ecfmg.org to obtain a Performance Information Agreement and a Medical School Profile survey.
