Many graduate medical education (GME) programs have found it useful to provide newly arriving international medical graduates (IMGs) with information on a range of topics using locally developed manuals, often called “Survival Guides.” These guides provide context for the topics addressed as well as specific local resources and contact information. Creation of such a guide, however, can be a challenging and time-consuming task.
To assist GME programs with this process, the ECFMG Acculturation Program has developed an IMG Survival Guide Template for programs that wish to develop their own guide. This template was inspired by focus groups of program directors and IMGs and an outstanding example of such a guide created by the Internal Medicine Program at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center (SVCMC) in Cleveland, Ohio.
Available as an editable Word document, the template allows local program authors to edit any text portions of the document and to include appropriate local information and contacts to produce a guide that is tailored to the institution and its local needs.
