Goal and Objectives of the Acculturation Program

Goal

To assist newly arriving international medical graduates (IMGs) in adjusting more quickly and easily to learning and practice within the U.S. medical education system, and working and living in the United States.

Objectives

To identify the core issues relating to acculturation for IMGs and monitor issues as they evolve

To develop resources including model syllabi for IMG orientation programs that can be used by IMGs, Program Directors, and others

To make these resources widely and freely available via the ECFMG website and other means to any and all interested users

To provide appropriate services to facilitate communication between IMGs and those who can best advise and assist them

To develop and disseminate faculty development materials and other educational resources for those who supervise, teach, and work with IMGs to enhance understanding of the challenges, backgrounds, and issues relating to IMGs

To collaborate with individuals, institutions, and organizations that are developing resources in acculturation and related areas

To serve as a clearinghouse for a range of materials, programs, or resources that may be useful to IMGs and those with whom they work and interact
